Andy Evans, PhD, MInstCES

Andy is a very experienced surveyor with both industrial and academic experience. He currently works as a Product Specialist for Topcon focussed on Imaging solutions and has conducted research work in the areas of augmented reality and rapid survey techniques for 3D data generation and visualisation. One of his recent research projects was to develop an Outdoors Augmented Reality System, this work specialised in combining cutting-edge surveying technology with the latest computer vision techniques.

Andy's speciality is the application of Imaging, the latest cutting edge tool for Engineering Survey, he is conversant with the many conventional survey technologies including Laser Scanning and RTK GNSS, and has a full understanding of the site appraisal process.

His role at EPD is Geomatics consultant, previous project work has forged strong links with the Ordnance Survey, Yorkshire Water and Topcon all companies committed to utilising geo-spatial data to its' maximum potential.

Andy graduated from Newcastle University with a degree in Surveying and Mapping Science, worked in the Offshore Industry as a seismic vessel navigator, and then as an offshore surveyor, the majority of work related to positioning oil exploration rigs, before returning to academia to complete a PhD at the University of Nottingham in Space Geodesy.

Andy is a keen paddler focussing his efforts primarily on fun, river-running, playboating and competitive polo.

His serious paddling career started at Newcastle University and like other EPD personnel he was heavily involved in the running of a very successful canoe club. Recent trips have taken him all over the world, with many reports published in the paddling press.

He has had a great deal of exposure to man-made and natural river resources and knows what makes a great ride.
