Andy Laird, MEng, CEng, MICE, MCIWEM

Through his career knowledge and several years working as EPD’s Lead Consultant he has developed experience at quickly appraising suitable sites for canoeing development. Having dealt with the process involved, a knowledgeable and direct approach can be taken; ensuring consultation with all the relevant agencies and bodies takes place.

He has considerable knowledge in the design of artificial whitewater courses, involving design expertise in open channel hydraulics, pumping station design, whitewater course obstacle systems, variable wave shape systems, civil design of the main channels, mechanical / electrical design of pump systems and transfer conveyor belts.

Andy has excellent & proven project management skills and has solid design knowledge on which to manage and understand the design and implementation process.

EPD has encompassed his broad water and environmental engineering knowledge.

Andy has a high level professional career. It began as an award winning student from Newcastle University. From this base he then worked for the Environment Agency, then a leading Design Consultant mainly in the Water Industry both in the design office and on site supervising construction activities on various projects. He then worked as design coordinator and then as a Framework Manager for Multidisciplinary Contractor; before forming EPD Ltd. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer and a Chartered Environmental Engineer.

Andy has been kayaking and canoeing since the age of 14. He has been slalom racing in Division 1 for the last 10 years, often representing the region and his home club in competitions. Whilst at University he diversified into whitewater racing, freestyle and polo, with several notable national results.

He has continued his participation in polo and now plays regularly in national and local leagues. Andy has also an enviable list of countries including: the European Alps; Norway; New Zealand, British Colombia and the Northwest Territories. He has paddled in these locations mainly with his friends in the Poly Kayak Club and his home club Copeland CC.

Within the UK he has paddled dozens of rivers in the UK including all the popular destinations:Tryweryn, The Bitches, Holme Pierrepont, Tees Barrage, Grandtully, Tyne Tour, Dee Tour, Cardington, Washburn, Hurley Weir, Correyvecken / Grey Dogs.

Andy has written and co written a number of articles for the canoeing press with his fellow Poly club members on trips in the UK and abroad. He has also provided advertising material and photographs in sponsorship deals with major manufacturers and suppliers.

Andy is an active BCU member with a Level 3 coaching qualification in Inland Kayak and Level 2 for Open boats.
