Matt Simpson, PhD

Matt Simpson has very specialist knowledge and experience regarding water quality and environmental impacts.

He has an excellent understanding of the chemical and microbiological aspects of water quality and is very familiar with current regulator standards.

He has worked on a number of substantial projects including an Impact Study on Water Quality for the proposed second Tyne Tunnel crossing for the Environment Agency, water treatment studies for Kvaerner and work for DEFRA on leachate contamination.

His research interests focus around the provision of better drinking water for people in developing countries.

Matt learned his paddling skills during his time at Newcastle University were as well as helping run the club he dabbled in the various competitive disciplines his time at university has seen him as national student champion in polo white water racing (C1 and K1 team) and freestyle. Through the auspices of the Poly kayak club Matt has filled a passport with exciting stamps from same rather exotic locations. These include: the European Alps; Zambia; Norway; Peru; California; Chile; British Colombia and the Northwest Territories.

Within the UK he has paddled dozens of rivers in the UK including all the popular destinations:Tryweryn, The Bitches, Holme Pierrepont, Tees Barrage, Tyne Tour, Dee Tour, Cardington, Washburn, Hurley Weir.

Matt has written and co written a number of articles for the canoeing press with his fellow Poly club members on trips in the UK and abroad. He has also provided advertising material and photographs in sponsorship deals with major manufacturers and suppliers.
